June 1, 2012, Executive Council and the Activities Planning CommitteeParticipants on this cruise will depart from Greenport to Long Bar, the site of Bug Light. Visitors will explore the lighthouse, see the view the lighthouse keepers saw, take photos, view a special exhibit and listen to a narration of its history and stories.
This 90 minute trip will be narrated by Ted Webb, an expert on local maritime history and one of the people instrumental in Bud Light’s restoration; and/or Bob Allen, the great grandson of William H. Follett, the last lighthouse keeper of Bug Light. They will share family stories and legends about the lights, including several that are reputedly haunted….
The cruise will begin with a welcome at the East End Seaport Museum, where participants will get their boarding passes and see the actual Fresnel lenses of Plum Island and Little Gull lighthouses. The Peconic Star II will ferry visitors back and forth to the lighthouse.
From the lighthouse pier, people will enter the lighthouse from the ground floor and climb a short stairway to a main room. A fenced deck surrounds this level, enabling harbor views from all sides. On a clear day, the shore of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, is clearly visible across Long Island Sound.
RASCC members will be able to enjoy the group discount price of $30.00 per person, $25.00 for children and teenagers. The price includes a complimentary bottle of water. After lunch (see below) we will meet at East End Seaport Museum by 3:30 PM to get boarding passes. Wine, beer and water will be available for purchase on the Peconic Star II. The excursion will leave promptly at 4 PM returning at 5:30PM.
The Peconic Star II has a maximum of 80 passengers. Some spaces are already reserved, so early registration is necessary to guarantee a spot. The Peconic Star II is reserving seats for us until May 15.
RASCC members will meet at 12:30 PM for a pre-cruise, on your own, lunch at Claudio’s restaurant in Greenport. Claudio’s is very close to the East End Seaport Museum. While eating at Claudio’s, you can park in the restaurant’s parking lot but after lunch you will have to drive to the free village lot and walk a few blocks. It is about six blocks from Claudio’s to the seaport museum and the village lot is in-between. It is recommended that you park in the village lot and walk to both Claudio’s and the dock.
